11[beta]-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase-type 2 evolved from an ancestral 17[beta]-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase-type 2 Nature Precedings
Michael E. Baker.
11[beta]-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type-2 (11[beta]-HSD2) regulates the local concentration of cortisol that can activate the glucocorticoid receptor and mineralocorticoid receptor, as well as the concentration of 11-keto-testosterone, the active androgen in fish. Similarly, 17[beta]-HSD2 regulates the levels of testosterone and estradiol that activate the androgen receptor and estrogen receptor, respectively. Interestingly, although human 11[beta]-HSD2 and 17[beta]-HSD2 act at different positions on different steroids, these enzymes are paralogs. Despite the physiological importance of 11[beta]-HSD2 and 17[beta]-HSD2, details of their origins and divergence from a common ancestor are not known. An opportunity to understand their evolution is...

New sequencing technologies make it possible to achieve genome sequence fast and cheap. Since the assembly step of such next generation reads is still not well standardized it is the most cumbersome part of sequencing projects.
We present here approaches undertaken on the way to the draft assembly the cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Borszczagowski) genome done with the use of 8x unpaired and 4x paired (3 Kbp) pyrosequenced 454 XLR Titanium reads, together BAC library ends fragments (12,7x physical coverage). Two different assembly approaches, namely Celera and Celera/Arachne were finally used. The Celera result was 15’196 contigs of 197 Mbp length and N50 27’086 bp and 4’157 scaffolds of 224 Mbp length...

15Nitrogen transfer from legumes to neighbouring plants in multi-species grassland Organic Eprints
Pirhofer-Walzl, K.; Høgh-Jensen, H.; Rasmussen, J.; Rasmussen, J.; Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J..
This study investigates the N transfer from legumes to neighbouring plants, grasses, legumes and herbs in a temperate grassland. In a field experiment white clover (Trifolium repens), red clover (Trifolium pratense) and lucerne (Medicago sativa) were leaf-labelled with 15N enriched urea. The 15N tracer was measured in above-ground plant tissue of eight neighbouring plants in two subsequent harvests in 2008. The three legumes donated 15N to all neighbouring plants, of which grasses, white and red clover were strong receivers. Results show that N transfer increases with N application and from the 1st to the 2nd cut.

15Nitrogen uptake from shallow- versus deep-rooted plants in multi-species mixtures and monoculture grassland Organic Eprints
Pirhofer-Walzl, K.; Høgh-Jensen, H.; Rasmussen, J.; Rasmussen, J.; Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J..
Only few studies have explored the importance of functional diversity in temperate agricultural grasslands in relation to nitrogen (N) uptake. This study investigates the consequence of growing deep-rooted plants together with grass-clover mixtures in terms of N uptake efficiency from deep soil layers. The objective was to compare the N uptake of the shallow-rooted grassland species Lolium perenne and Trifolium repens; and the deep-rooted species Cichorium intybus and Medicago sativa in monocultures and mixtures. We hypothesized that growing deep-rooted plant species in mixture with shallow-rooted species increases the N uptake from deep soil layers partly through competition. A 15N tracer study was carried out with 15N enriched ammonium-sulphate placed at...

15N-labeled glyphosate synthesis and its practical effectiveness Scientia Agricola
Tavares,Claudinéia Raquel de Oliveira; Bendassolli,José Albertino; Ribeiro,Daniela Neves; Rossete,Alexssandra Luiza Rodrigues Molina.
Glyphosate is the herbicide with the greatest participation in the world market, and it has been used intensively in agriculture for over 30 years, especially because of its relatively low cost and high effectiveness on different species. This study describes a synthesis method of glyphosate in the form of the isopropylamine salt enriched in the stable nitrogen isotope (15N). The 15N-herbicide synthesis was performed using a phosphomethylation reaction with dialkyl phosphite and 15N-glycine. The tests were conducted at a microscale and equimolar quantities. A 20% yield was obtained at the established conditions. To test the effectiveness of the synthesized glyphosate, an experiment was performed in a growth chamber with the weed Lolium multiflorum...

16S rRNA gene-based molecular analysis of mat-forming and accompanying bacteria covering organically-enriched marine sediments underlying a salmon farm in Southern Chile (Calbuco Island) Gayana
Aranda,Carlos; Paredes,Javier; Valenzuela,Cristian; Lam,Phyllis; Guillou,Laure.
The mat forming bacteria covering organic matter-enriched and anoxic marine sediments underlying a salmon farm in Southern Chile, were examined using 16S rRNA gene phylogenies. This mat was absent in the sea bed outside the direct influence of the farm (360 m outside fish cages). Based on nearly complete 16S rRNA gene sequences (-1500 bp), mat-forming filamentous cells were settled as the sulphur-oxidizing and putatively dissimilative nitrate-reducing Beggiatoa spp., being closely related (up to 97% sequence identity) to Beggiatoa spp. identified in eutrophic shallow sediments in northern Europe (Danish Limfjorden and German Dangast inlets). Their phylogenetic affiliation was consistent with their morphology as vacuolated and sulphur-containing cells...

2009 Annual Report of the Southwestern Minnesota Farm Business Management Association AgEcon
Nordquist, Dale W.; Kurtz, James N.; Nitchie, Donald L.; Paulson, Garen J.; Froslan, Janet M.; Christensen, James L..
Average net farm income was $69,787 in 2009 for the 95 farms included in this annual report of the Southwestern Minnesota Farm Business Management Association. Average earnings decreased by 63% from $190,901 in 2008. This continues the downward trend that began in 2008 after six years of steady increases. As expected, low incomes for virtually all types of livestock operations pulled the average down, and some livestock farms sustained large losses. Crop farms, on average, were profitable but also earned much lower incomes compared to recent years. Median net farm income, or the income earned by the middle farm, was $96,130, substantially higher than the average. This indicates that the average was pulled down or skewed by large losses sustained by...

2009 Michigan Cash Grain Farm Business Analysis Summary AgEcon
Wittenberg, Eric; Harsh, Stephen B..
This report summarizes the 2009 financial and production records of 88 Michigan cash grain farms. To be included, the farms must have produced at least 50 percent of gross cash farm income from one or a combination of these items: corn, soybeans, wheat, navy beans, oats, sugar beets and other small grains. The records came from Michigan State University’s TelFarm project and Farm Credit Service of Michigan. The values were pooled into averages for reporting purposes. Farm records were included if a farm financial analysis had completed 2009 data including beginning and ending balance sheets and a statement of income and expenses. The data was checked to verify that cash discrepancy was less than 10% of gross cash inflow and that debt discrepancy was less...
